Computer security is becoming a central issue not only in computer science, but also in the daily life of people. The World Wide Web, E-Commerce, Smart Cards, Mobile Telephony and Wireless Technology, are only a few examples of recent technologies that have a huge impact on society, and in which security aspects play a crucial role.
Aims
SAFE NL provides a forum for researchers, practitioners, and implementors from research institutions, industry and government agencies to exchange ideas on the state of the art in security technology, current and novel application areas of this technology, and on the requirements for effective deployment of secure systems.SAFE NL aims at
- Facilitating the exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners working in security, and foster discussion on recent developments in this field.
- Becoming a meeting-point (or community) for people working on and people working with secure technology, to build a bridge between research institutions and industries employing secure technology. This, in order to stimulate cross-fertilisation, to increase the research institutions' awareness of the market's need and - on the other hand - to facilitate technology transfer.
- Becoming a virtual expertise centre that can answer state-of-the-art information security questions that arise in Dutch society.
Scope
The scope of SAFE NL includes, but is not limited to:
- Algorithms, protocols and tools for security.
- Secure system design.
- Hardware security (e.g.\ smart cards).
- Verification and validation methods for secure systems.
- Data models and policies for secure systems.
- Legal, social, organisational and economical aspects of security.
Means
SAFE NL shall:
- Organise informal one-day workshops on security in the Netherlands, initially twice a year. The workshop location will rotate through the participating institutions and companies.
- Provide a moderated public mailing list for the exchange of ideas over security.
- Maintain a community web-site to inform a larger public of its activities.
The first workshop will be held on January 18, 2002 and will be hosted by the University of Twente. A separate announcement follows.
Related initiatives
Sentinels is a Dutch research program on security in ICT, networks and information systems. The Sentinels program aims to give a very significant boost to security expertise in the Netherlands by providing and managing resources for scientific research in information security, by building a national IT-security community, and by disseminating the results into industry and government in the Netherlands. Sentinels is managed by STW.SAFE-NL, on the other hand, does not fund research, but aims to build a research community by regularly organising informal workshops. This community will be encouraged to submit project proposals to Sentinels.
There are several other interest groups in the Netherlands covering the area of information security, for example the Platform Informatiebeveiliging. the Genootschap voor Informatie Beveiliging, and the Afdeling Beveiliging of the NGI. These are concerned with the practical aspects of implementing security measures in organisations. All three organise workshops and meetings on these topics. SAFE-NL, on the other hand, is concerned with state-of-the-art research into models, methods and techniques for information security.
Mailing list
SAFE-NL organises a moderated mailing list, on the subject of security in the Netherlands. To (un)subscribe to the list point your browser here.Of course, the name and email addresses contained in the list will not - under any circumstance - be given to any third party.
