PINPAS: Simulating side channel attacks on smartcards

Side channel attacks on smartcards target the implementation of a cryptographic algorithm on a smart card. The physical charateristics of the card, such as its power consumption, may leak information about the values being computed. This may compromise an otherwise secure algorithm. In the PINPAS (Program INfered Power Analysis in Software) project we have developed a simulation tool for smart cards which can also simulate leaked the side channel information. This allows one to simulate attacks which use side channel information. As a demonstration the tool will be used to simulate a differential power analysis (DPA) attack on a cryptographic algorithm. The main benifits of software simulation above hardware measurements are the increased flexibility and reduced development time as potential countermeasures (both software and hardware) can quickly be tested.
